Eclectics' first show of 2012 is Friday, January 27 from 5-8 pm - The Glow Show!

Eclectics has been through our annual cleaning and reorganizing (Thanks for letting us close up for a couple weeks in January....we missed you too!)

We are now open again and prepping for The Glow Show. We would LOVE to see you there....it's time to think about gifts for your Valentine. And during the dark days of winter, lights and glowing things bring comfort and cheer to us all.

We also welcome two new member artists: Judy Macy (aprons, baby items, other fiber arts) and Gale Schlagel (jewelry).

Come by anytime. We love seeing you all. Thank you for your support over the years.

Jury Duty!

There is still time to call and schedule yourself for Saturday, January 14th when the members of Eclectics will meet to jury new member applications.

If you would like us to consider some of our art - especially if you would like to join Eclectics - please call us today. Actually, call Wendy at (816) 820-4945. She will call to schedule you.

What's a "jury"? Basically, when art is "juried" it is evaluated for inclusion in a gallery or art show. At Eclectics, it means we (the current members) look at items to decide if they are 1)sellable, 2) unique, 3) well-made, 4) hand-made, and 5) not duplicating something we already have.

Eclectics has built a reputation for representing artists with unique vision, who create their own work, and who are local to the KC area. We are not looking for "conventional" or "cute". And we love when artists re-use materials, recycle, repurpose and go green.

What a great night for Amy Isenberg! Last Friday, Eclectics hosted local artist Amy Isenberg's first trunk show. Amy works mostly in glass - making lampwork beads, fused glass items and mosaics.

She had a great turnout of supporters and a very successful sale. Thanks to all who came and especially those who made purchases. She sold many items, including the wonderful mosaic window shown behind her.

Margi Posten: Artist Statement

Ifsomeone had told me a few years ago, I would become a ceramic artist, I would have laughed. You see, I'm an actor. A card carrying AFTRA/SAG member, still working and auditioning as I have for over 30years. I've literally done hundreds of radio and TV commercials, trainingfilms, narrations--you name it, I've done it. Everything from Hallmark toViagra and in between. I love it ,but have no control over how often Iget a chance to audition, to work, to be creative. I can't justdecide ' I want to act today' and do it. ( Well, I guess I could, butthat's another story!) So, my dilemma: how do I combine my need to becreative every day with the acting work? As most things that matter do, the answer came when I wasn't looking.

I took a random handbuilding class at Red Star Studios, located in my newdowntown neighborhood, and fell in love with the dirt. Eureka! Icould be creative every day and have something to show for it. It fed my creative need. It was on my terms. It kept my my body active andnurtured my brain. It was fresh and new. Like a new loveinspiring passion and devotion.

Now, a few years later, the ideas just keep on coming. There is so muchto learn- a couple of lifetimes worth. My work now is on a double track. I've always enjoyed watercolors and am transferring that techniqueto the clay body, studying surface decoration, low fire colors and form.The other track involves texture. I love to stretch, pull, throwand distort red earthenware into organic shapes like trees and vines andfigures. Some of my textures come from mundane everyday objects andso-called trash. My favorite textures, however, come from objects I havebeen given throughout my life. I use the lace placemats I receivedfrom my grandmother when I got married. I use the antique perfume bottle thatmy mother-in-law brought me from China. I use the plate with mygrandson's footprint on it. I use the face of my mother's bronze figurine. These 'sentimental' textures evoke a connectionto the past while exploring new ways to use them. My work is furtherinformed by a month long trip to Asia I took several years ago. It changed theway I look at things around me, sort of a natural feng shui, thatintuitive balance which tells me when a pot is finished.

And so, here I am now, the accidental ceramist and sometime actor. I hope you enjoy my work and feel the passion I have for it.

Did you know September is the 2nd highest month for births in the US? Second to August. Third is July, then October....likely having much to do with temperatures in October, November, December and January! These figures are from 2006 (the most recent year stats were available when Life's Little Mysteries published this blog post in 2010.

Eclectics has a variety of baby-appropriate gifts, including a wide variety of green onsies from consignor Elise Keeling - green since they are nearly-new onsies given a new look with Keeling's clever silk screen designs.

Another favorite item is Carie Allen's "warm-a-baby" dolls - rice filled, microwavable dolls great for warming the car-seat or bassinet. Or for just cuddling.

We also have soft dolls in a variety of shapes and sizes, from rabbits

and sock monkeys

to cloth Russian-style babushkas and some baby-friendly accessories.
So remember Eclectics when you need a unique, hand-made gift for a new baby or new mom. They'll thank you.

Shows Time!

August. In the MidWest, that means it's Festival Season. Every weekend from now until nearly November, there are festivals, fairs and art shows everywhere. Most small towns have their own and if you live in or near Kansas City (as Eclectics' artists do) you can go to one or more each weekend. The venerable Plaza Art Fair (Note: Many local artists have trouble getting into this one), the Un-Plaza Art Fair (same weekend, see note), the Art Westport (local artists only!), Kansas City Irish Festival, Zona Rosa Arts Festival, Overland Park Fall Festival, Lee's Summit, Sedalia, Lenexa, Wichita....and those are just the biggest ones.

Surprise! Eclectics takes a different approach (even though some individual Eclectics artists can be found at various local shows). We are hosting our own events. In the coming months we have scheduled several local artists' trunk shows, plus our own Cat's Pajamas on Friday September 30th.

Carol Cole teaches Fused Glass Techniques at Eclectics and through UCSD's Communiversity. All her classes take place at Eclectics Gallery location. Learn the basics of fusing glass. Materials and firing are available from Carol.

Get started with peyote stitch beadwork or learn to re-create your old jewelry with Lynette Fisk. Classes can be tailored to what you want to learn and you can work one-on-one with Lynette.

Dian Stanley has offered Paper Bead Making and we hope she'll do another class soon.

Though Eclectics is known for offering things we make ourselves, we hope to encourage everyone to be more creative. A full calendar of classes is available at Eclectics. Is there a class you would like to take and no one offers it? Let us know, maybe we can help.

Jim recycles wine a liquor boxes and bottles to make unique and functional lighting. You may have seen his stylish home decor around KC and now we have some here at Eclectics. Custom installations available.

Another new consignor (we met her at the KC Maker Faire!) is Mama Janes Creations. For homemade flavor for your dips, spreads, soups, snack mixes and meat rubs, try some of these delicious custom-mixed flavor treats. You party will taste like homemade, because it is!

Don't forget to plan for next Spring with a hand-made, cedar birdhouse, made by Brad's Custom Birdhouses. Houses are hand-nailed and glued, primed, painted and embellished with stylish touches....

and ready to hang. Birds will love them and so will you.

One of Eclectic's consignment artists -- Yvonne Rosser -- is currently featured in Dolls Magazine with her contemporary spin on the classic Sock Monkey!

Rosser is a retired teacher whose charcoals and pastels are in both private and public collections. She lives in Kansas City with her husband, who is chairman of the painting department at the Kansas City Art Institute. Several of her landscapes are also available at Eclectics.

Interviewer Suzanne S. Arney wrote, 'Where her carefully worked charcoal and pastel landscape drawings evoked a mood, Rosser said, “the dolls are just playful. Maybe they touch my inner child.” She loves the idea of monkeys, saying, “they have mischievous qualities, they’re cute and funny,” and she’s delighted with the fanciful array of children’s socks now available.“The colors and patterns of the socks inspire the ideas for the dolls,”she said. As she works, each doll assumes its individuality and character, suggesting changes and details and, as it nears completion, even its name....“When I was a teen, my mother and I fantasized about having a craft shop. In a funny way it’s come around—I have things for sale in craft stores.”One of those is Eclectics Gallery in Kansas City (www.EclecticsKC.com). Co-owner Lynette Fisk is excited about Rosser’s dolls and their sprightly patterns.“ They’re not your usual sock monkey doll—they’ve got real personalities.They’re child-friendly, but they appeal to all ages,”Fisk said. She’s right. I couldn’t resist buying one for each of my grandchildren. But after giving them away, I found I had to buy another for my husband!'

The Beginning!

Twenty years ago I was an avid quilter but because my growing family was consuming all the ‘art space’ in our home I had to find a hobby that was suitable for our 100+ year old cellar. I tried a fused glass class through University of Missouri – Kansas City’s Communiversity Program about 15 years ago, loved it, and discovered this was a great hobby that could be done in the ‘dungeon’ below our home. Ten years later and here I am sharing what I know with others.

What is Fused Glass?

Glass that is joined together by the application of heat in a kiln is 'fused'. What the end product is depends on temperature, type of glass, how it's layered, etc. It is exciting to see what comes out.

Her Beginning:

Ninette is most happy when handling fabrics.

"Born in Belgium in a house with two seamstresses, a grandmother and an aunt, it was very natural that I started sewing at about the age of four. In grade school, I learned to knit, crochet, and embroider. On to high school, still it was sewing all the way. After four years of teaching and design school, I was on my way to the U.S. with several yards of fabrics in my trunk that I could not leave behind."

Finding Vintage Fabrics and laces, and putting colors together makes her the happiest!

If you aren't able to sign up for a Fused Glass Class through Communiversity please call the shop for additional class dates and times. If you have three or more people you can also set up your own class. Just call the shop to get your date arranged. A great girl scout or teen birthday idea!

In this introduction to fused glass you will learn about the process and get to create something beautiful. You can make a small dish, magnets, jewelry, etc. Your piece(s) will be fired and ready for pick-up approximately three weeks after class.

Heart's Desire POSTPONED due to SNOW

It's snowing! Kansas City is predicted to receive 9" of snow tonight and tomorrow and since the local weather forecasters were VERY accurate last winter when predicting heavy snow, we've decided to take a SNOW DAY and postpone our Heart's Desire show until NEXT WEEK.

We would hate to throw a party and have no one come! And we won't want to be out on slick streets that night either. So please, stay safe and avoid snowy streets on Friday night.

But plan to come and join us on Friday, January 28 from 5-8 pm for Heart's Desire at Eclectics.

February at Eclectics: Former Kansas Citian Ed Fenendael Trunk Show. Ed's paintings will be on display during February with an artist's reception on Friday, February 4 from 5-8 p.m. Check out Ed's stuff on his website. His studio is in Wisconsin but he will be a visiting professor at the Kansas City Art Institute this winter and he likes to have a show in his former neighborhood when he's in town.

REAL Snow in KC

Kansas City finally has some real snow - though I'm sorry for those who must scoop, drive or otherwise deal with dangerous activities, today is my day to stay in the house, cook a pot of chili for dinner and watch the snow. Gotta love it! (Must confess to several cups of latte and a couple leftover cookies from the freezer, but don't tall Dale.)

The birds love our yard in the best weather, but today they are using our heated bird bath in crowds. Starlings, grackles and robins descend in clouds - we had to add water in spite of the 4" of snow that has fallen in our yard so far.

Every house has snow on the roof, including the squirrels' house in the woods.

We hope you and yours are safe and snug and we hope to see you later this month when Eclectics re-opens on January 17th. Our first show of 2011 will be on Friday, January 21 from 5-8 pm with Heart's Desire. See you then.

Kansas City, Missouri – Eclectics Gallery, 7015 Oak Street in Kansas City announces a call for artists. Eclectics has built a reputation for featuring only hand-made items primarily from local artists. IF you are driven to create, if you make things to adorn people or the places we inhabit, if your art is quirky, unusual, nad original, we, the artists of Eclectics, are looking for you.

Acceptance of new artists is based upon the quality of workmanship, originality, uniqueness, and sell-ability and is determined by consensus of the members’ jury.

Currently the co-operative gallery has openings for members, who become partners sharing in responsibilities of running the gallery while selling our collection of hand-made original items.

Eclectics was a pioneer in the artists’ cooperative gallery movement in Kansas City when it began twenty years ago. Many local artists got their start in the business of selling their work by becoming members or consigners at Eclectics.

Just finished reading today's paper - news just keeps on being depressing. Especially the part about more and more families facing real hunger. Makes trying to run a gallery of hand-made art seem extravagant. But also explains why galleries are having trouble making it this year.

When Eclectics opened nearly 20 years ago, we were pioneers in the small boutique gallery niche in Kansas City. Now there are so many wonderful galleries, art fairs and seasonal art shows, that we sometimes feel like Waldo in the "Where's Waldo" books - getting lost in the crowd. We are still here and still worth finding.

We also must be careful with our spending and our email promos are our ONLY way of sending information to you, unless you follow our blog regularly. Printing and mailing postcards has become prohibitively expensive, so our VERY BEST way of promoting Eclectics is by your "word of mouth".

Susan is not only a creative quirky potter, she is president of the KC Pottery Guild - and she travels to do out-of-town art shows. One busy lady!!!

Sunday, October 10, some of Susan's work was featured in the KC Star's "Getting Started" column in the KC Star Magazine under the heading Creative Cake Toppers.

Herbold jewelry features gemstones, wire, beads and more. She is also an avid and active competitive tennis player who has lived in the OP area since 1988.

Congrats to Lynette Fisk, whose newest bead weaving bracelet design was recently published in Beadwork Magazine. The magazine is available at book and craft stores.

Her bracelet pattern is in the monthly "Simply Seeds" department.

The bracelets pictured in the article will soon be available for sale at Eclectics.

So, who else has been published, you ask? Robin MacIntosh, for one. Robin collaborated (designed and created much of the jewelry) for Button Ware, written by Amy Barickman of Indygo Junction in 2008. It's also available from online book retailers.

Once upon a time, 19 years ago, a small group of local artists naively decided to open a shop to sell the great variety of whimsical art items they were making, reasoning “Someone will want to buy this!”

Every year, the artists had mini nervous breakdowns as they paid the bills, created more and more new art, welcomed new member artists and said goodbye to others. But the years moved by and Eclectics Gallery remained.

The artists learned marketing, merchandising and management, endured mayhem and experienced miracles. As in other tales, the heroines (and heroes) were valiant, the wolf has been to the door, charming characters have come and gone, but the dream happily lives on.

Please come, help us celebrate, and wish us “many more years”. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Classes On Demand!

We know you want our classes. You know we want to teach. But we don't have a great way to coordinate our class dates with your free time . . . so Eclectics introduces Classes On Demand.

Just like watching a movie when it's convenient for you, we hope to offer the class you want when it is convenient for you. Check out our class listings for July and August. If you see a class or two you want to take, but the date or time just doesn't work, we now have a solution. Here's how:

Call the gallery at 816-361-6643 (Monday-Saturday from 10 am - 6 pm)
Ask for the phone or email of the teacher whose class you want to take. NOTE: Some teachers want a minimum of 2 students, some will do a one-on-one class.
Contact the teacher to set up a mutually agreeable date and time for your class.
Call or stop by the gallery to pay the class fee no later than 48 hours before your class date.

Beginning July 21, Wednesday afternoons from Noon - 2 pm will be GREEN DAY at Eclectics. Recycle. Up-cycle. Re-purpose. Re-use. All good ideas that can help you help the planet.

Artist Kathy Gray (she draws those darling ducks and bunnies and more...) will be teaching a different creative recycling idea every week. Using leftovers of all kinds, she'll show you how to make them useful, even before they picked up by the recycling truck. You will use old papers (phone book pages, old maps, magazines, cereal boxes, cardboard, and more) to make practical and useful things. This list will get you started.

Create your own custom-designed cards using a throw-away meat tray, ink and blank card stock. Great for kids or adults. Tools to bring: a sketchbook or paper and pencil to create design. In this introduction to fused glass you will learn about the process and get to create something beautiful. Steampunk Pendant *

Create your personal Steam Punk statement using a copper blank rectangle, found objects, old watch parts and used chain. Students will assemble a unique pendant using metal stamping, patinating, riveting and cold connections. Kit includes all you need, but you may bring your own items to add. Felt Food *Class On Demand—Contact teacher to set up

Make non-plastic, non-toxic, washable play food from felt. Students will receive printed instructions, full-sized patterns for a variety of fruits and vegetables. Dates don't work for you? Check out our On Demand Classes. You can't download us, but you CAN arrange for the class you want, when you want it. Most of our teachers will set up a class just for you at a time that is good for you and the teacher. Classes take place at the gallery and the same class fees apply. Most teachers want a minimum of 2 people for On Demand classes, though some will arrange for one-on-one teaching.

Four intrepid students gathered at Eclectics last night to create Steampunk Pendants.

(Mostly, it's a matter of learning some beginning "cold connection" techniques like riveting metal pieces together.) They were soon happily hammering away, imparting textures onto their copper pieces.

Working with metal is great for tool junkies and there are many ways to attach elements together. Kelly finished her pendant first, using some charms she brought with her.

Students added bits of metal, gears, rivets, wire, metal charms and more to make their pendants unique. This one done by Saralee show how she added lots of background texture and elements.

Later she sent us a pic of her finished pendant.

We also added an aged look with patina gel, instantly imparting years of build-up. Here Carol stirs the magical patina potion.

The results are often dramatic.

Classes have started, and will continue through the summer. Most classes we offer will be repeated so keep watching our calendar listings.

Father's Day is this month and you won't want to forget those favorite Dads in your life. We don't have ties or money clips, but you can find some great gifts at Eclectics. Coffee mugs, hand-thrown by a KC area artist. A distinctive eyeglass hotel for his desk.

Fused glass stir sticks great for those icy summer beverages, and much sturdier than a plastic one, and greener too!

We carry a wide variety of cards with original art or photography for those guys who appreciate a heart-felt, hand-written message of love from you.

For the Fred Flintstone types, spell his name in cement blocks by Steve Hess. Great for gardens, too.

Birthdays Those of us with summer birthdays have lots of celebration options. Eclectics Gallery will be celebrating our 19th Nervous Breakdown (Birthday/Anniversary) in July. Watch for more information about our party on July 16.

A new feature in the gallery is our Wish List form - get one at the sales desk. Write down the items (and tag codes) on the list and give it to the person who buys gifts for you.
